Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. Award for Summer Study Abroad in East Asia
The History Department is pleased to announce the Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. Award, offering three awards of up to $7000 summer study abroad in the following countries (listed by priority): China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, The Philippines, Indonesia or Singapore. Each award will assist with the cost of the summer program, including tuition, registration/application fees, airfare, room and board, program-required field trips/tours, and some meals.

Who can apply?
History majors and minors, Asian and Pacific Studies majors and minors, and Liberal Studies majors with a concentration in History.

Am I eligible?
To be considered, students must have an overall 3.2 GPA and have completed two lower division courses and one upper division course in History (or a third lower division course) by the end of the 2017-2018 academic year.

What do I need to do?
You will need to complete an online application through the Study Abroad Office including:
  1. An essay that describes your interest in studying abroad in Asia, identifies the program you would like to attend, explains how you hope to benefit from the experience and how study abroad in Asia will enhance your overall academic experience.
  2. History Majors/Minors: a letter of recommendation from a full-time faculty member in the History Department; ASPA Majors/Minors: a recommendation from a full-time affiliated ASPA faculty member or the ASPA Program Director requested through the online application.
  3. Approval from the Study Abroad office identifying the summer program to which you intend to apply.
The application will close Sunday, February 10, 2019, at 11:59pm. Direct any inquiries to Dr. Constance Chen at (310) 338-2369 or Award recipients will be notified via email.

What programs should I consider?

Students are welcome to apply for any Asia related summer study abroad provided by any accredited US or International University.  Below is a shortlist of programs previous award recipients have participated in.
